In the research school education of graduate students (PhD students) in all aspects of cardiovascular function and cardiovascular diseases is provided in the graduate course program. The ICaR-VU checks new contracts with PhD students for the educational program and follows the progress of the graduate students (Graduate Student Committee or AIO-committee). The theoretical part of the scientific education of the graduate students is the responsibility of the Institute within the framework of the Research School. The Institute has, for this purpose, a Graduate Student Committee.
Every new graduate student will be informed about the courses to be taken. The graduate student and supervisor suggest the course load to the Graduate Courses Committee of the ICaR-VU. The committee checks, verifies and endorses the program. The graduate student receives a diploma for each successfully followed course. The progress of the graduate student is evaluated after 10 months and after 3 years. Reports are filed with the Graduate Student Committee of the ICaR-VU. After 2 years a special session to exchange future developments between graduate student and supervisor is held. A written report about this session is made and filed with the Graduate Student Committee. General courses are given by others but the courses on the cardiovascular system are all given by the members of the Research School. The total course load for graduate students is 200 days over the period of four years. The courses in the ICaR-VU can be divided in different categories. The basic cardiovasular courses are organised by the institute, or by CARIM. The general courses are organised by Free University Amsterdam. The specialized courses are organized by the NHS.
