Vereniging voor Spaanse wetenschappers
Begin januari is een vereniging voor Spaanse Wetenschappers in Nederland (SWNL) opgezet om wetenschappers uit Spanje bij elkaar te brengen. De initiatiefnemer, postdoc bij Amsterdam UMC Noelia Lozano-Vidal, ziet het als haar missie om Spaanse academici te verenigen om zo kennis uit te wisselen. ‘Veel Spaanse wetenschappers denken dat ze hier de enige Spanjaarden zijn.’
SWNL is bedoeld voor Spaanse wetenschappers van verschillende disciplines werkend door het hele land. ‘De vereniging biedt een platform om wetenschap te communiceren naar de buitenwereld en om van elkaars vakgebied te leren,’ vertelt de postdoc. Het eerste event wordt over twee weken georganiseerd en binnenkort komt er een volwaardig programma met activiteiten en bijeenkomsten uit. Tot die tijd is het lidmaatschap nog gratis en open voor iedereen, dus ook voor niet-Spaanse wetenschappers.
De eerste vereniging voor Spaanse wetenschappers is in 2011 opgezet in Engeland en er zijn nu zestien verenigingen wereldwijd. Waarom er in Nederland nog geen vereniging was opgezet is de onderzoeker niet duidelijk. ‘Ik heb gemerkt dat andere Spanjaarden in Nederland hooguit twee andere landgenoten kennen en vaak denken dat dit alles is.’
SWNL groeit met de dag maar is opzoek naar meer leden. Informatie over de vereniging en het lidmaatschap zijn te vinden op de site. ‘Ik kijk erg uit naar het eerste event om zo iedereen die lid is geworden te ontmoeten’, vertelt Lozano-Vidal met een stralende blik.

Association for Spanish scientists
At the beginning of January, Científicos Españoles Países Bajos (CENL) was founded which is an association for bringing Spanish scientists in The Netherlands together. The founder, postdoc at Amsterdam UMC Noelia Lozano-Vidal, made it her mission to unite Spanish academics and exchange knowledge. ‘In Holland, a lot of Spanish scientists think they are the only Spanish people around.’
CENL is meant for Spanish scientists from all kind of disciplines across the country. ‘The association will be used as a platform to teach each other about their work field and disseminate research.’ Soon, an interesting program with multiple activities and meetings will be offered. Until then, the membership is free of charge and open to everyone, also non-Spanish scientists.
The first association for Spanish scientists was founded in 2011 in the UK. This day, there are 16 associations worldwide. It is not clear to the researcher why there wasn’t an association in The Netherlands before. ‘I noticed that other Spanish people in Holland only know up to two other people from the same country, and they think that that is all.’
CENL grows by the day but is looking for more members. Detailed information about the association and the membership can be found online. ‘I look forward to the first event and meet all the members so far’, she says with a big smile.
