Gibbs, Sue (dr.)

Cell biologist/molecular biologist
Specialisme: tissue engineered skin for wound healing and in vitro assays

Deskundigheidsgebied

Dr. Sue Gibbs (cell biologist/molecular biologist) is Head of Dermatology Laboratory. She is an expert on tissue engineering of the skin. Dr. Gibbs, together with her dermatologist colleagues, has successfully introduced 'bench to bedside' research into the dept. of Dermatology.

Currently, custom-built autologous skin substitutes are being developed and implicated into multi-center clinical trials for healing difficult to close wounds (chronic wounds, surgical wounds and deep burns). This work has lead to the foundation of the spin off company - A-Skin (www.A-skin.nl).

Parallel to this research, but by no means of less importance, is the development of in vitro skin assays. The European importance of this research line is realized by the coming ban on using animals for identifying potential sensitizers, irritants and cytotoxic compounds (European ban: 2013). The increasingly stricter legislation around using animals for testing novel therapeutics and medical research should also not be underestimated.

Trefwoorden

Tissue engineering, huid, wondgenezing, in vitro assays.
